While famous for producing whisky, the craftsmen of Speyside have been creating some delightful alternatives to Scotland’s national drink. On this trip you will visit Balmenach Distillery, home of Caorunn Gin, where you will be treated to a behind-the-scenes tour and tutored tasting session. The day also includes a visit to Dava School House for a highly informative Highland coffee tasting session. The tour concludes with a trip to Rothiemurchus farm shop with its fine collection of Highland gins.
We start the day with a visit to Dava School House for an informative and fun coffee tasting session. Situated high on Dava moor, the former school house dates back to 1875 and provides fantastic surroundings to learn about where coffee beans are sourced, the techniques used in roasting and the various methods of preparation. Our hosts, Andy & Sharon, started up Cairngorm Leaf and Bean coffee roastery and have a wealth of information to pass on. Your tasting session includes 3 samples from across their range to nose and taste followed by a cup of coffee of your choice accompanied by some scrumptious home baking.
For lunch we will take you to a beautiful country house restaurant set in attractive surroundings. What was once a Victorian shooting lodge has now been restored beyond its former glory to become a vibrant and luxurious Highland hotel with a popular restaurant specialising in fresh, seasonal and local produce.
Following the River Spey as it winds its way north east through Cairngorm National Park, we reach the Balmenach Distillery, home of Caorunn Gin. Caorunn is created in small batches, each bottle personally handcrafted by the distillery’s Gin Master. He oversees each step of the process and ensures that the finest pure grain spirit and locally foraged botanicals are slowly and carefully vapourised through the world’s only working Copper Berry Chamber. The result is a beautifully flavoured and well balanced gin. You will be treated to a privileged behind-the-scenes tour of their production area where you will gain an insight into their artisanal process. After the guided tour you will then experience the unique opportunity to enjoy a tutored deconstructed nosing and tasting session featuring Caorunn’s locally foraged and traditional botanicals, botanical essences and a 5cl neat sample of Caorunn. The experience then closes with a refreshing Caorunn gin and tonic with crisp Coul Blush Apple wedges.
Finally, we make our way into the heart of the Cairngorm National Park to visit the well stocked Rothiemurchus Farm Shop where a fabulous selection of quality local produce is on offer. The Farm Shop stocks its own home-grown produce such as Highland beef, wild venison, fresh rainbow trout and heather honey and other artisanal produce from cheese makers, chocolatiers, preserve makers, butchers and many more.
