Hauf an’ a Hauf

The phrase “hauf an’ a hauf” describes the Scots’ tradition of enjoying a dram of whisky with a half pint of beer chaser. You can do this in epic style by sampling a selection of Tomatin Distillery’s soft and mellow malts followed by a generous tasting session at the Cairngorm Brewery. Tours of each facility will be provided along with a visit to the Rothiemurchus Farmshop.

We start the day with a short drive to Tomatin Distillery where one of their friendly guides will take you on a tour of the production facility where you will learn how their award winning whiskies are created using the naturally soft water of the Alt-na-Frith. The tour includes an engaging visit to their on-site cooperage and finishes with three single malts from the Tomatin range.

We then head for lunch at Cairngorm Brewery’s own restaurant, The Winking Owl, which stocks draught ales such as White Lady and Trade Winds in addition to the ever popular Deuchars IPA. The menus have received Visit Scotland’s Taste our Best Award so choose from a tasty light bite to accompany your beer or a mouth watering main meal followed by a delicious desert.

We make our way to Cairngorm Brewery where the friendly team will welcome us and show you around the 20 barrel brewhouse which is capable of producing up to 6500 litres of fine ale per day. Cairngorm Brewery produces a fantastic variety of malty and hoppy ales using traditional recipes and more contemporary styles through their use of old and new hop varieties. After the tour of the facility, you are invited to a generous tasting session from their wide range of multi award-winning permanent and seasonal beers.

Before heading home, we take you to the well stocked Rothiemurchus Farm Shop where a fabulous selection of quality local produce is on offer. The Farm Shop is located within the Cairngorms National Park and stocks its own home-grown produce such as Highland beef, wild venison, fresh rainbow trout and heather honey and other artisanal produce from cheese makers, chocolatiers, preserve makers, butchers and many more.
